The Housing committees’ goals are to help grow McGrath, to encourage the growth and sustainability of the tribe and local community by providing additional, affordable housing options. We can improve existing infrastructure, increase population, decrease the high cost of living, build up the work force, boost economy, create jobs, create a childcare facility, and add to the services that are available in the community, as well help elders maintain their independence as long as possible.
We plan to achieve this by the following 5-year plan:
First Year Goals: FY 2024
- Establish a building crew.
- Create a housing fund account.
- OCTOBER 2023 – Start the process of auctioning off one of the existing FAA houses, specifically the first one closer to the road, not hooked up to existing city water. Funds to be added to housing account.
- MNVC will look for houses and land to purchase in the community.
- Access elder stairs and need for ramps, create priority list based on need from assessment. Purchase materials.
- Build stairs/ramps for elders, going by assessment priority list.
- Rehabilitate and weatherize the Bunkhouse for rental purposes to put funds back into the housing account. We will prioritize the VPSO and/or teachers and then non-local clinical staff for renting opportunities for the Bunkhouse to provide additional housing opportunities to these key positions in the community.
- Purchase house in the community and rehabilitate/weatherize for the purpose of a childcare facility.
- Order caribou cabins with COVID funds.
Second Year Goals: FY 2025
- Complete remaining elder stairs/ramps.
- Build the Caribou Cabins purchased with the COVID monies.
- Rehabilitate and weatherize purchased house (#8 from first year goals) for the purpose of a childcare facility in order create jobs, build up the work force, so that those with children have to opportunity to work with a reliable support system.
- Rehabilitate and weatherize the second FAA house, further from the road, that is plumbed into existing city water to rent out, income to go back into the housing fund.
- Purchase 2 houses and lot in the community to improve and add to the additional housing options.
- Weatherization of local elder tribal households’ homes.
Third Year Goals: FY 2026
- Weatherization of additional elder tribal households’ homes.
- Rehab and weatherize the two purchased houses (#4 year two goals).
- Build on lot (#4 year two goals).
Fourth Year Goals: FY 2027
- Weatherization of additional elder tribal households’ homes and other tribal households’ homes based on the priority list.
Fifth Year Goals: FY 2028
- Weatherization of additional elder tribal households’ homes and other tribal households’ homes based on the priority list.
